Home

This is the home page for the family of Danny (George Thomas) & Gran (Eleanor Isabella) Bathgate. The site is not at present trying to be a family tree, although it is possible to incorporate family data imported from such programs in gedcom format (more on that later).

Eleanor’s success in finding our cousin Laon, uncle Jim’s son, has been the motivation for having a site, so that we can have a single place to go to share and learn about our family. All the NZ grandchildren knew about Laon from when we were kids but didn’t expect to get to know him, so having contact at last is pretty exciting for us all.

What I am hoping for is that each branch of the family find someone or several people with WordPress skills to add information and news  If there isn’t anyone who feels competent yet, I am happy to upload data for you (and teach you how to do it yourself as it isn’t hard once you get familiar with it.) I do have some teaching videos I can link to if anyone needs them.

To this end, I have given the default new user admin privileges (sorry, had to change that to prevent spam; new users will have subscriber status.  If anyone wishes to become a contributor to edit existing posts and pages, add new pages, add new posts etc, please send me an email on the contact page & I will upgrade you; thanks, Trish).  When you register, a password will be emailed to you.

If you are new to WordPress and blogs, I will be adding a link to some videos soon that will guide you through the process so that you’ll be able to join in building the site as a valuable resource for generations to come. Many of George and Eleanor’s grandchildren are now in their 60’s, so it will be good to record their stories before their knowledge is lost.

Being a webmaster grew from being a hobby for me, so if we have any professionals in the ranks, please step forward and offer advice, or take over the task, I won’t be at all offended.

Another important thing is for people to correct errors in factual information on the site, either by editing the site themselves or advising myself or one of the other users of it.

Just a reminder that it is common for different people to recall certain events in a different way – it doesn’t necessarily mean that a memory is in error, just perhaps that a different aspect of the circumstances was noted. I’m sure we all have the capacity to accept a different point of view but when we see something we don’t think is right, perhaps send a message via the contact page or if you are editing, maybe put a note in the body of the paragraph saying “recalled by … as being … and not …” or something of that nature, so that the original words are not deleted except if the author agrees. This situation may not ever come about, but when we have multiple users with admin access, could easily happen, so by having a procedure in place, no-one’s feelings will be hurt.

Please feel free to register and add info right now!

Editor note – the war records and integration with the family member page is a Work In Progress; I started in one direction and changed to using a different format. Of course the whole site is a WIP and may well look and feel quite different down the track.
